Steamed Dumplings with a Savory Filling Recipe

Servings: 30 dumplings
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • Pinch of salt

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 lb (225g) ground pork, chicken, or shrimp (or a mix)
  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Optional: chili flakes or a dash of hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 30 minutes.
  1. Make the Filling:
  • In a bowl, combine the ground meat, cabbage, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.
  1. Shape the Dumplings:
  • Divide the dough into small, walnut-sized balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 3 inches in diameter.
  • Place 1–2 teaspoons of filling in the center of each wrapper.
  • Fold the dumpling in half and pinch the edges to seal, pleating if desired.
  1. Steam the Dumplings:
  • Line a bamboo steamer or regular steamer with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking.
  • Arrange the dumplings in the steamer, leaving some space between each.
  • Steam over boiling water for 12–15 minutes, or until the filling is fully cooked.
  1. Prepare the Dipping Sauce:
  • In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and chili flakes. Adjust to taste.
  1. Serve:
  • Serve the dumplings warm with the dipping sauce on the side.

Tips:

  • Make It Vegetarian: Substitute the meat with finely chopped mushrooms, tofu, or a mix of your favorite veggies.
  • Freeze for Later: Arrange uncooked dumplings on a tray, freeze, and store in a bag for quick meals. Steam from frozen for 15–20 minutes.
  • Enhance the Flavor: Add a touch of hoisin sauce or oyster sauce to the filling for more depth.

Enjoy your delicious and savory steamed dumplings, perfect as an appetizer or main dish!
