Beef Lo Mein

Here’s a savory recipe for Beef Lo Mein, perfect for satisfying takeout cravings at home:

Beef Lo Mein

Ingredients:

For the Sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp ground white pepper (optional)
  • 2 tbsp water or beef broth

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 8 oz (225 g) lo mein noodles (or spaghetti as a substitute)
  • 1 lb (450 g) beef flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (divided)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Noodles
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the lo mein noodles according to package instructions. Drain, rinse with cold water, and toss with a bit of sesame oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, sugar, white pepper, and water or beef broth. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Beef
Toss the sliced beef with cornstarch in a bowl to coat evenly. This helps tenderize the beef and gives it a nice sear.
  4. Stir-Fry the Beef
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned and just cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Stir-fry the garlic and ginger for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the carrots, broccoli, and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp.
  6. Combine Everything
Return the beef to the skillet, along with the cooked noodles and green onions. Pour the sauce over the top and toss everything together. Stir-fry for 1–2 minutes until everything is well-coated and heated through.
  7. Serve
Serve hot, garnished with additional green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Tips:

  • Vegetable Options: Feel free to swap in your favorite vegetables, like snap peas, bok choy, or mushrooms.
  • Beef Substitute: You can use chicken, shrimp, or tofu instead of beef for variety.
  • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of chili oil for some heat.
