Classic Patty Melt

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • For the Patty:
    • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
    • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • For the Onions:
    • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, for sweeter onions)
    • Pinch of salt
  • For Assembly:
    • 8 slices of rye bread (or sourdough for a variation)
    • 8 slices of Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
    • 2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. If desired, add sugar halfway through cooking. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Patties:
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties slightly larger than the bread slices (they’ll shrink during cooking).
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the Patty Melt:
    • Lay out the bread slices. On each of 4 slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a generous scoop of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices.
  4. Grill the Sandwiches:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread butter on the outside of each sandwich.
    • Place the sandwiches on the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  5. Serve:
    • Slice the sandwiches in half and serve hot with pickles or your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips:

  • Add a slice of American cheese for a creamier melt.
  • If you prefer a tangy kick, spread some Dijon mustard or Thousand Island dressing on the bread before grilling.
  • Swap rye bread for sourdough or Texas toast for a different twist.

Enjoy your rich and satisfying Classic Patty Melt!
