Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for slightly sweeter bagels)
For the Everything Bagel Topping:
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
- 1 tablespoon dried garlic flakes
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary (optional)
For Boiling:
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a shiny crust)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, then stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Shape the Bagels
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a ball, then use your thumb to create a hole in the center, stretching it out to form a bagel shape.
- Place the bagels on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them.
Step 3: Boil the Bagels
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the baking soda and honey (if using).
- Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water, 2–3 at a time. Boil each bagel for 1 minute on each side.
- Remove the bagels with a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
Step 4: Add the Toppings
- In a small bowl, combine the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion flakes, garlic flakes, coarse salt, and rosemary.
- Sprinkle the topping mixture generously over the wet bagels.
Step 5: Bake the Bagels
- Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and have a nice, firm crust.
- Let the bagels cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Tips for Perfect Bagels
- Boiling: Boiling the bagels is key to getting that chewy, dense texture. Don’t skip this step!
- Toppings: Customize your topping mixture to suit your taste—try adding some flaxseeds or crushed red pepper flakes for a different twist.
- Storing: Bagels are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze them for up to 3 months.
These Homemade Everything Bagels are perfectly chewy, flavorful, and the perfect canvas for cream cheese, smoked salmon, or your favorite spreads. Enjoy!
