Ingredients

For the Donuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon maple extract (optional, for extra maple flavor)
  • Vegetable oil for frying (if frying)

For the Maple Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3-4 tablespoons maple syrup (preferably pure maple syrup)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Donut Dough

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and maple extract (if using).
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The dough should be thick but smooth.

Step 2: Shape the Donuts

  1. For Fried Donuts: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about ½-inch thickness.
  3. Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes. If you don’t have a donut cutter, you can use two round cookie cutters to create the shape.
  4. Carefully drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, cooking about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.For Baked Donuts (optional method):
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Lightly grease a donut pan.
  7. Spoon the donut batter into the pan, filling each mold about 2/3 of the way.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the donuts are golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 3: Prepare the Maple Glaze

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. If the glaze is too thick, add a bit more maple syrup to reach your desired consistency.

Step 4: Glaze the Donuts

  1. Once the donuts have cooled slightly, dip each donut into the maple glaze, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow the excess glaze to drip off.
  2. Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to set for about 10 minutes, allowing the glaze to firm up.

Tips for Success

  • Oil Temperature for Frying: To ensure your donuts are cooked perfectly, use a thermometer to monitor the oil temperature. If it’s too hot, the outside will burn while the inside remains raw. If it’s too low, the donuts will absorb too much oil and become greasy.
  • Alternative Glaze Flavor: For a different twist, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or a few drops of maple extract to the glaze for more maple flavor.
  • Storage: Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. You can also freeze the unglazed donuts and glaze them when you’re ready to enjoy!
