A Chicken Parmesan Calzone is the perfect fusion of two classic Italian favorites—chicken parmesan and a cheesy calzone. With crispy dough, tender chicken, marinara sauce, and plenty of gooey mozzarella and Parmesan, this calzone is a cheesy, savory delight. It’s easy to make, and sure to please the whole family!
Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup marinara sauce (plus extra for dipping)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Calzone:
- 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Chicken:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Set up a breading station: one bowl with flour, one bowl with beaten eggs, and one bowl with a mixture of breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and coat with the breadcrumb-Parmesan mixture. Press down slightly to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken breasts and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Transfer the chicken to a baking sheet.
- Spoon marinara sauce over each chicken breast and top with shredded mozzarella. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Once cooked, remove from the oven and set aside to cool slightly.
- Assemble the Calzone:
- Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a large circle (about 12 inches in diameter).
- Slice the cooked chicken breasts into strips or small pieces, and layer them in the center of the dough, leaving a border around the edges.
- Add additional marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using) on top of the chicken.
- Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal the calzone, crimping the edges with a fork for a tighter seal.
- Cook the Calzone:
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the calzone on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a sharp knife to make a few small slits on the top of the dough to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the top of the calzone with a little olive oil or melted butter for a golden, crispy crust.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the calzone is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve:
- Let the calzone rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve with a side of garlic bread or a simple salad for a complete meal.
- A glass of red wine, such as Chianti or Sangiovese, pairs well with this flavorful dish.
