Tomato Basil Pasta Recipe

This fresh and flavorful tomato basil pasta is a simple yet delicious dish, perfect for a quick weeknight meal. The combination of ripe tomatoes, aromatic basil, and garlic creates a savory, light sauce that pairs beautifully with your favorite pasta.

Ingredients

For the Pasta:

  • 12 oz (350g) pasta (spaghetti, penne, or your choice)

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 large ripe tomatoes, chopped (or 1 can of diced tomatoes)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta.
  2. Prepare the Sauce
    • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute, until fragrant.
    • Add the chopped tomatoes, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir and simmer for 8-10 minutes, until the tomatoes break down and form a sauce.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Combine Pasta and Sauce
    • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing to coat the noodles in the tomato sauce. Add reserved pasta water, a little at a time, if you need to thin the sauce.
    • Stir in the fresh basil, allowing it to wilt into the sauce.
  4. Serve
    • Serve the pasta warm, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and extra fresh basil for garnish.

Tips

  • Add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar for extra depth of flavor.
  • For a creamy variation, stir in a splash of heavy cream or a dollop of mascarpone cheese.
  • Add grilled chicken, shrimp, or roasted vegetables for a heartier meal.

Enjoy this bright and delicious tomato basil pasta!
