For the Dough:
- ¾ cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
For the Filling:
- ¾ cup chocolate hazelnut spread (like Nutella)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup chopped hazelnuts (optional)
For the Glaze:
- 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (to thin, as needed)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, egg, egg yolk, and melted butter. Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon into the chocolate hazelnut spread.
Step 3: Assemble the Rolls
- Roll the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the chocolate hazelnut mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts if using.
- Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice into 12 equal rolls using a sharp knife or dental floss.
- Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover and let them rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Step 4: Bake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 5: Make the Glaze
- In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix until creamy and spreadable.
Step 6: Serve
- Spread the glaze over the warm rolls.
- Serve fresh and enjoy!
Tips for Perfect Rolls
- Warm the Spread: Slightly warm the chocolate hazelnut spread for easier spreading.
- Prevent Overbaking: Keep an eye on the rolls to ensure they stay soft and gooey.
- Make Ahead: Assemble the rolls the night before, refrigerate, and bake fresh in the morning.
