Ingredients
For the Burgers:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or your favorite)
- 4 burger buns
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
- Pinch of salt
Toppings (Optional):
- Lettuce
- Sliced tomatoes
- Pickles
- Mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise
Instructions
1. Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until the onions are golden brown and soft.
- For extra sweetness, sprinkle sugar over the onions halfway through cooking. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Prepare the Burger Patties:
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties slightly larger than the buns.
3. Cook the Burgers:
- Heat a skillet, grill pan, or outdoor grill over medium-high heat.
- Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness, or adjust to your preferred level.
- Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last minute of cooking, covering with a lid to melt the cheese.
4. Toast the Buns (Optional):
- Spread a little butter on the cut sides of the buns.
- Toast them on the skillet or grill until golden brown.
5. Assemble the Burgers:
- Spread your preferred condiments on the bottom half of each bun.
- Layer with lettuce, tomato, and the cheesy burger patty.
- Top with a generous heap of caramelized onions and finish with the top bun.
