Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying

For the Honey Sesame Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (to thicken the sauce)
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken:
    • In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • In another bowl, beat the eggs.
    • Place the cornstarch in a third bowl.
    • Dip the chicken pieces into the flour mixture, then the egg, and then coat them evenly in the cornstarch.
  2. Fry the Chicken:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Fry the chicken in batches for 4-5 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
    • Remove the chicken from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  3. Make the Honey Sesame Sauce:
    • In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger (if using).
    • Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
    • In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1 tbsp cornstarch with 2 tbsp water to create a slurry.
    • Slowly stir the slurry into the sauce, then cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
    • Stir in the sesame seeds and red pepper flakes (if using).
  4. Coat the Chicken:
    • Once the sauce has thickened, add the crispy chicken pieces back to the skillet with the sauce.
    • Toss the chicken in the sauce to coat evenly, cooking for another 2-3 minutes.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Honey Sesame Chicken over steamed rice, garnished with extra sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired.

Tips

  • For a crunchier texture, double coat the chicken by dipping it again in the egg and cornstarch before frying.
  • You can add some steamed or sautéed vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, or snap peas for a complete meal.
  • For a lower-sugar version, use a sugar substitute like monk fruit or stevia in the honey sauce.
