- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger (optional)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (to thicken the sauce)
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken:
- In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs.
- Place the cornstarch in a third bowl.
- Dip the chicken pieces into the flour mixture, then the egg, and then coat them evenly in the cornstarch.
- Fry the Chicken:
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the chicken in batches for 4-5 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
- Remove the chicken from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- Make the Honey Sesame Sauce:
- In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger (if using).
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1 tbsp cornstarch with 2 tbsp water to create a slurry.
- Slowly stir the slurry into the sauce, then cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Stir in the sesame seeds and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Coat the Chicken:
- Once the sauce has thickened, add the crispy chicken pieces back to the skillet with the sauce.
- Toss the chicken in the sauce to coat evenly, cooking for another 2-3 minutes.
- Serve:
- Serve the Honey Sesame Chicken over steamed rice, garnished with extra sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired.
Tips
- For a crunchier texture, double coat the chicken by dipping it again in the egg and cornstarch before frying.
- You can add some steamed or sautéed vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, or snap peas for a complete meal.
- For a lower-sugar version, use a sugar substitute like monk fruit or stevia in the honey sauce.
