Tuna Melt Recipe

A classic comfort food, the tuna melt features a rich and creamy tuna salad topped with melted cheese on toasted bread. It’s simple to make and perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

For the Tuna Salad:

  • 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water or oil, drained
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion (optional)
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or white)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)
  • 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American cheese work well)

Instructions

  1. Make the Tuna Salad
    • In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped red onion, celery (if using), lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich
    • Butter one side of each slice of bread.
    • Spread a generous amount of the tuna salad on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread.
    • Place a slice of cheese on top of the tuna salad. Then top with the other slice of bread, buttered side out.
  3. Cook the Tuna Melt
    • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once hot, add the sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down slightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  4. Serve
    • Slice the tuna melt in half and serve immediately.

Tips

  • For added flavor, try adding a few pickle slices or a dash of hot sauce to the tuna salad.
  • You can make the sandwich even more filling by adding fresh tomato slices or avocado.
  • For a healthier version, use Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise.

Enjoy your creamy, cheesy tuna melt!
