A classic comfort food, the tuna melt features a rich and creamy tuna salad topped with melted cheese on toasted bread. It’s simple to make and perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
For the Tuna Salad:
- 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water or oil, drained
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp finely chopped red onion (optional)
- 1/4 cup celery, finely chopped (optional)
- 1/2 tsp lemon juice
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sandwich:
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or white)
- 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)
- 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American cheese work well)
Instructions
- Make the Tuna Salad
- In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped red onion, celery (if using), lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined.
- Assemble the Sandwich
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Spread a generous amount of the tuna salad on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread.
- Place a slice of cheese on top of the tuna salad. Then top with the other slice of bread, buttered side out.
- Cook the Tuna Melt
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once hot, add the sandwiches and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down slightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
- Serve
- Slice the tuna melt in half and serve immediately.
Tips
- For added flavor, try adding a few pickle slices or a dash of hot sauce to the tuna salad.
- You can make the sandwich even more filling by adding fresh tomato slices or avocado.
- For a healthier version, use Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise.
Enjoy your creamy, cheesy tuna melt!
